New construction of highway service station Hellweg Süd - Route 44

The starting point was the planning team’s participation in the competition launched in 2014 by the state agency Straßen.NRW to design a service station on the A44 motorway near Geseke, on the historic Hellweg. The aim of the competition was to develop an architectural concept that both reflected the landscape and cultural characteristics of the location and met high design and sustainability requirements.
After successfully participating, the planning team was selected as the winner in a subsequent process and commissioned to realise the construction project.
The green roof echoes the gently undulating topography of the surrounding area and allows the building to blend smoothly into the landscape. The load-bearing glulam structure remains visible in the interior, creating a warm, open atmosphere with a sound-reducing effect. Flowing transitions between the building roof and the petrol station roof create a harmonious overall impression.
The modelled design of the outdoor playground and the surrounding green spaces is also based on the regional landscape and reinforces the location-specific identity of the complex.
